thanks!
all that stuff...well some of it is going to goodwill.
some of it is in the trash.
some of it is in more appropriate places around the house/garage.
and most of it is hiding in the room where i keep my soaping supplies, packed into rubbermaid tubs.
the actual hanging part, yes. i know how to do that (but am not strong enough by myself in most cases.
the mudding and tapeing part? i still have a lot to learn.

Fabulous!

Those look great! I am in awe at your skills. :)

Also, a very nice Frenchman I know is going to be in the Twin Cities area for work at the end of the month, and he was asking:

Any advice on:
- dressing corporate in freezing weather
- local geeky shops
- other things to do in the week-end

Have you any hints I could pass along?

dressing corporate in freezing weather:
don't bother looking nice outside. no one else does. it simply doesn't work.
and under the layers no one can tell who you are anyway a lot of the time. :)
i recommend a nice shirt/nice slacks and then whatever you need to stay warm on top.
if you absolutely must have a dress coat, carry it inside with you and then change into it once you are inside.

local geeky shops:
the source on larpenter&snelling is the best place for all kinds of gaming. there are others, but that one is the best.
magus in dinkytown (near the University of Minnesota) is great for all things incense/pagan/new age (although i tend to stock up at the renn faire and have never been). supposedly the people there are really nice.

things to do on the weekend...kinda depends on which weekend.
the como conservatory is open in winter and is a good spot for geek fans of "war for the oaks by emma bull. also it is very warm inside to keep the plants happy and the park in which it is located is beautiful. the science museum is pretty awesome. if your friend is up for concerts, he should check out first ave/the front line....but concerts in the twin cities are really pretty easy to google.

also with regard to dressing warmly.
don't mess around with this in mn.
don't pretend you can wear the elegant shaped overcoat instead of the big poofy goosedown. especially if you are not from this area. EMBRACE the goosedown.
especially since the windchill is -30 tonight.
serious.

Wow, I'm jealous. How hard was it to actually do? Our basement could use an overhauling.

not really that hard. just REALLY HEAVY and exhausting.
i'd recommend at least 3 people.
you can pretty much use an exact knife and one of those metal L-shaped rulers for cutting the dry-wall, but if you are messing with ceilings at all, i would recommend a 3rd leg/lazy man - basically two pieces of wood nailed into a T shape that you can use to brace one end of the dry-wall against the ceiling.
also you will need a router/dremel to cut around outlets and such. hanging the drywall itself is easy.
the mudding and taping is the hard part (requires some knowledge and finess).

Holy crow. I remember your "before" basement from my visits. The pseudo-after looks really nice.

Wow.

I haven't been over there since around the first time Ross, Christo, Ryan, Jory and I were roofing the place but that looks nice.

And wtf? No Pop-Tarts on Roscoe's metal shelving? Did you actually get him to stop eating only 2 pop tarts total for breakfast AND lunch at work no matter how long he was there?

Well they're nowhere near as tasty as any of these recipes you've been posting sound, so it's no wonder he hasn't asked. ;) I think he just "got by" on them because they were portable and fast.

And you're right, I really should visit. Maybe once it thaws a bit, or perhaps even when the sky stops dropping fluffy white stuff all over the place, I'll venture out to the great far east and see all the renovations.
