dressing corporate in freezing weather:
don't bother looking nice outside. no one else does. it simply doesn't work.
and under the layers no one can tell who you are anyway a lot of the time. :)
i recommend a nice shirt/nice slacks and then whatever you need to stay warm on top.
if you absolutely must have a dress coat, carry it inside with you and then change into it once you are inside.

local geeky shops:
the source on larpenter&snelling is the best place for all kinds of gaming. there are others, but that one is the best.
magus in dinkytown (near the University of Minnesota) is great for all things incense/pagan/new age (although i tend to stock up at the renn faire and have never been). supposedly the people there are really nice.

things to do on the weekend...kinda depends on which weekend.
the como conservatory is open in winter and is a good spot for geek fans of "war for the oaks by emma bull. also it is very warm inside to keep the plants happy and the park in which it is located is beautiful. the science museum is pretty awesome. if your friend is up for concerts, he should check out first ave/the front line....but concerts in the twin cities are really pretty easy to google.
