i think a small colony of razorblades has moved from my chest up to my throat and begun building an apartment complex.
did i mention that i'm already taking dayquil and 5 zillion cough drops?
i'm supposed to be meeting with my class group to interview the pastor of the church we are going to work with this afternoon.
i think i will be going to the doctor AGAIN instead.

UPDATE: i officially have the st. paul crud (which the doctor himself also has - questionable practice if you ask me). my strep test was negative and my white blood count is mid-range. which means it's a virus and no antibiotics will help. the doctor was kind enough to give me prescription level cough medicine with codeine. i feel like last night is the first time in ages i've slept well.

Hope you feel better soon

I'm sorry you have to keep going to the Dr. I hope you're feeling well again soon. How long have you been feeling this way?

I know the feeling. I am so sorry you are sick. I wish I could come to your house and make you a big old pot of chicken soup.

If you get another cold that feels like this one, drop me a line. I'll send you a quart of tea.
Other than that, I highly suggest Traditional Medicinals Gypsy Cold Care. Strange recommend from me, as I usually HATE companies that use the word Gypsy in their name - so few actually understand what the word means.

Hope this finds you well.

that is very kind of you.
i LOVE gypsy cold care when i can find it.
right now i am working on a pot of breathe easy...since that seems to be where my problem is centrally located.

Meh. I just want to make all those who I approve of aware of how much herbs can help.
I'm also rather happy with the concoctions that my partner and I have made as far as tea. The one I like the most would not be useful for all - but it is sort of a catchall for colds, feminine issues, and headaches/migraines. That one I could actually just give you the basic recipe for if you would be interested.

Is finding the traditional medicinals teas hard where you are? Or is it just the coldcare?

As far as breathing issues are concerned - just straight pepermint, or any of her cousins, can help loads. (Pennyroyal is related, and has some other lovely health assists.)

Then again, I'm getting to a point where I could rant on such things for ages, so I'll cease for now.

i can understand wanting people to be aware of herbal potential. if i had my way, i would have a full garden pharmacopoeia.
as it is i grow catnip, lemon verbena, sage, marjoram, basil,
peppermint, lavender, parsley, chives, barberry, tansy, lemon balm and hops. some years i do curry and oregano as well. a lot of things die off over the winter up here, but i keep experimenting to see what i can keep alive. unfortunately i don't have the nack with roses up here that i would like to have. i could use some nice rose hips about now.
i would be interested in your recipe. i haven't gotten into making my own teas much, but i've made medicinal honey, crystalized ginger and a tincture for colds that tasted vile.
gypsy cold care seems to be the only one that is difficult to find. i suppose i could just order more teas online. i get rainbow meadow's catalog for my soap-making and there are TONS of teas there for colds i could invest in....
i have been drinking some peppermint tea...is pennyroyal safe to drink as a tea? it's so strong! i'm actually a big fan of catnip for colds.

do you have any favorite herbal reference books? i like the natural health encyclopedia of herbal medicine, growing 101 herbs that heal and the ultimate herb book.:)

I would love to be able to make my garden a first aid kit - but there just isn't enough of me to go around, at this point, to actually do all the work I would need to to manage that on top of everything else. While my housemates are getting better about not being near-useless, they are far from getting there as yet.
I had a bit more planned for this year, but something either about the seeds i chose, or our soil (which I will hopefully manage to replenish in all the beds before spring, fingers crossed) made everything that had not just reseeded from last year die. And even then, none of last year's basil came back up - which was just odd - because I intentionally let the last sequence go to seed, because I was hoping for it again this year.
Sounds like a good set of choices there. Do you keep an eye out for medicinal "weeds" and harvest those as well?

I'll dig up the "recipe" - although that word has to be used a bit loosely, the way we make it. 1 part this, 2 parts that, couple pinches this, toss some of this in if you feel like it or have it... sort of thing. That's the way I tend to operate in the kitchen overall.

I know that cold care tends to be the hardest to find out here, we just have the luck of having a couple of locally based stores that tend to have it - and strangely one store that focuses primarily on British and European imports that also tends to stock it.

I've never had any issues with using pennyroyal with fair regularity - however, I have a lot of problems that it addresses nicely, and herbs are like any kind of medicine - if there are things for them to do, the ill effects happen less. Sort of like the rule of thumb with the more serious painkillers - don't take them until you feel no pain, take them until you feel pain you can handle. If you still hurt a bit, you won't end up overdosing into stages of addiction.

No books, really, as yet. Bits and snippets I've collected from all over - pamphlets, leaflets, stories, the web - slowly trying to get some actual books, if only because I so love sitting down with a book in my hands when working on things. Scribbling down the ones you've mentioned here, so I can have a look.

What I really want right now as far as reference is concerned, is a good botanical for this area. I want scientific names alongside common, with both the line drawings and colour images, so that I can actually identify for sure and certain the things that I'm nearly sure about as far as random growth medicinals. However, our financials won't allow for me to order one, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and watching our used bookstores with hope.

Ooooh, sounds terribly vile.
I hope that the virus bits are overcome by your immune system and give up.
And hooray for codeine cough stuff -- it really does the trick when you're coughing so bad you can't sleep.
Feel better soon!
