friday was great big sea.
and they were fantastic. well worth the 2 hours i sat in traffic and scrambled to find parking
to get the tickets. the scrim was ugly. the lighting was terrible. the sound guy had no clue
what he was doing and you could barely hear the harmonies.
they did a lot of stuff off their new album, fortune's favor, that i frankly think is crap.
the only whiskey being sold was jack.
and it was still a fantastic show.
it says a lot when a band can do that.
also one of the new t-shirts for them has a big octopus on it. tentacles FTW!

ross didn't have as good a time as i did, cuz he wasn't feeling very well. but i think he was
glad he went.
susan and her friend will and salsa and another feste we knew(but who's name i can't
recall) were there as well.

mostly it was a relaxing weekend for me. not-so-much for ross, as he was working on setting up
a triple-boot on his new work-laptop.
we picked up my car (new front tires, front-end alignment) from the shop. i need new brakes
and my rotors checked, but as it rained pretty much all weekend, that wasn't about to happen.

i talked to the cat lady on friday and found out that they are getting their last shots this coming saturday. i can pick up our kitten monday!!!

i also made ketchup.
from scratch.

myra sent us the tomatoes from her garden. romas work great for this because they are almost
all meat and have less juice. i boiled them enough to peel them thursday night and stuck them
in the fridge til saturday.
saturday i got a red pepper chopped half of it and half an onion. added them to the tomatoes
and boiled the lot til the tomatoes were tender. you'd think tomatoes would already be tender-
especially given that they had to be boiled to get the skins off!
it actually took quite a bit of boiling to get them all soft.
then everything got pureed in the blender and cooked down, spices, sugar, salt and vinegar added,
then cooked down some more.
the end result is potent. imagine the taste of ketchup and then increase it by 4 and that's about
what this is. i got 3.5 jars worth(pint sized)...which is plenty for ross and i. it's not like ketchup is
something you can give away if you have too much of it. it's not a gift sort of thing.
but i am very pleased to have just that much less HFCS in my diet.
and i'm guessing this will make killer cocktail sauce (add hot sauce and horseradish).

ross fixed my computer in addition to his laptop, and set me up with a new install of ubuntu, which
neither of us have ever used before. so far i am very pleased. i am going to be able to finish my letter
for my dad now. it's fast. and there are programs for
everything (typicaly linux). and there are even some podcasts out there to help me learn to use it.

which i am going to have to learn VERY SOON. the one problem is podcasts. there is a simple program
out there for managing ipods that works just fine. and there are many podcatchers to choose from.
i have 2 installed at the moment, which is probably overkill.
the problem is that the podcatchers i can find are ALL RUN THROUGH THE COMMANDLINE. and i am VERY
limited in my knowledge of linux commands. like i know how to find man pages and see lists of things.
i know how to change directories - VERY BASIC. so i have to learn how to use the commandline to manage
my podcasts and that is going to be a serious challenge. i actually LIKE working in a text-based system
as opposed to a GUI. it feels like i'm more involved with the computer in a direct way. kinda like driving
stick over automatic. but this is going to be a big learning experience for me all the same. and
ross can't help me much, because this flavor of linux is as new to him as it is to me - and he doesn't
care much about podcasts, so that isn't where he's going to be focused on learning.
the thing that really sucks is that he thought i was going to be able to go back and forth between windows
and linux with my ipod. that is definitely not the case. not only that, but trying to do so wiped everything
on my ipod again, so i am music-less at work until i figure this out.
as a result, i am highly motivated.

the rest of the weekend was mostly spent relaxing, staying up too late reading, and watching sopranos episodes
with ross (while he worked on his laptop and i knit or spun).
i have started a new pair of fawkes socks (named for dumbledore's phoenix). they have been waiting to be knit
for a while. the yarn (fleece artist *swoons*) has been sitting in my yarn basket....and moreover, the maple
leave socks are giving me fits.
i frogged them out once because they were too big and started them again at a reasonable size...but ultimately
the problem is that this yarn just doesn't work witht his pattern.
the maple leaves are so cute and i want them to pop out visually. this yarn isn't doing it. i will frog them and
make something else with it and find some other yarn to knit the maple leaves with. i might even do it in a solid
and then hand-paint the leaves so they stand out. some people on ravelry have done that and it looks great.
i also finished heads and bodies for 2 knithulhus this weekend. i need to make the wings, stuff them and put them
together and they will be finished. i could probably finish both of them AND the one that just needs wings tonight.
but i have other things to do like getting cat food and picking up a package from UPS while they are still open.

ha ha!

I'd love ketchup as a gift since Sooper and I live on it.

LOL I think a home-made bottle of ketchup for someone who really loves ketchup is a great gift! I would totally be like "That's the best gift ever!"

ugh i need new sock needles... jasper chewed mine and it has made sliding the yarn on the cable extremely difficult and time consuming. I'm ALMOST DONE too, which is what kills me!!

i guess if i know people who love ketchup, i don't know that i know them (except for [livejournal.com profile] madjulyn who just told me.:)

what kind of socks are you making?
are you on ravelry?

i guess condiment preference doesn't come up much when you're not out eating somewhere...

i'm making a pair of anklet type socks. it's my first attempt (I was going to do two at a time then decided I better do one at a time first) in the toe-up magic loop method. I made up my own cable pattern for the top part of the sock (the pattern I've been using had a really ugly one lol)

Yea I'm on ravelry! I'm not on there tons, though, mostly because my yarn/patterns/projects are not very organized. I'm hoping when we move I can set up shop somewhere in the house with my sewing machine and yarn and threads and all that. It's currently hiding in a corner behind a chair >__>

I do go on there to find patterns though.

even eating out - i just don't talk to people about condiments that much.
it's funny. they seem so ...extra...because you can't eat them by themselves...but they add so much! i need to learn more about indian condiments. for instance, i have no idea under what circumstances you would eat mango chutney.

i am eclipse on ravelry and you should friend me.:) i know, real original. i am on there lots. i love that site.
i can't deal with anklet socks. something about having something end around my ankles drives me nuts. but i think something straight stockinette for first time magic loop is probably a good choice.

any circumstance is great for mango chutney. LOL. my condiment-of-choice is usually barbeque sauce (memphis style... I don't go in for that vinegar-y runny north carolina style). I will eat it on pretty much anything. indian food...mm... there's a hole-in-the-wall place here called the clay pit that is to DIE for. and they are so nice and have huge flat screen HD tv's that play satellite Indian television. It's awesome.

the socks are actually for a friend (i ended up choosing some truly heinous lisa frank-esque yarn that I would never wear and my friend was like "oh i love it!" so I decided to make some for her lol). She prefers ankle socks so ankle socks it was! I'm almost done with the cuff of the first one.

yeah my friend [livejournal.com profile] mandibaby is big into spinning/knitting and all that. She teaches sock knitting classes and all kinds of stuff. you should friend her!!

I'll have to find you when I'm not at work lol ravelry gets messed up for some reason on my work computer.

condiment queen?

it goes on lamb mostly, as does mint jelly.

interesting.
we eat lamb often - but it is usually ground and in something, rather than a whole piece of meat.
i don't care much for mint jelly with my lamb. it's okay, but not something i want to keep on hand. i'm a bigger fan of it with matar paneer or in a shepard's pie.

For podcasts in Ubuntu, try gpodder. It's GUI and very nice in my opinion. gtkpod is better at handling the iPod, but I actually end up using Amarok for my iPod a lot of the time -- I got it working with minimal fuss. It doesn't do playlists, though, which sucks.

i currently have gtkpod running - but since moving back and forth between windows and ubuntu wiped my ipod, it's not doing me any good.
i also have hpodder installed. is that the same as gpodder? i haven't figured it out yet, either way.
