yesterday was a very stupid day at work.
all the 3M-er's (non contract workers) spent the whole morning in meetings and then went to tartan park too goof off all afternoon while the contractors held down the fort. meanwhile i had a vendor throwing a hissy-fit because her company made mistakes invoicing us and she thought threatening us with collections was a good response to this. i mostly couldn't get things accomplished without the other people there.
i came home and napped. a lot. hence i'm wide awake at 7am.

today should be better. only it's snowing. APRIL 26th AND IT"S SNOWING.
i'm so done with this. i'm going to get my comfy jeans and a baggy sweater, drink some tea and head over to the cat show. we are in the market for a new kitten and i need to find a breeder to work with.
then off to susan's 30th birthday party.

Um. Is the snow pretty, at least? (I realize that that may not have the same power for you as it would for me right now, since I bet you got more than two sticking snowfalls this winter.)

Why not go to an SPCA or other cat shelter for a kitten?

and we spent the whole winter from november to the end of march covered in snow. longest damn winter i ever saw.

the kitten question.
there are a couple reasons.
a lot of it has to do with the fact that maine coons are easier on people with allergies. my husband has a mild allergy to most cats, but none at all to maine coons...and we have several friends with very strong allergies. we want visiting us to be as painless as possible.
the other reason is that when i got my first one (due to an ex-fiance with allergies, rather than the husband), i fell completely in love with the breed. they are incredibly SOCIAL cats. they think they are dogs, really. they greet you when you come home and almost always come when i call...and my dearly departed luther was obsessed with licking my nose. i want that kind of dog-cat temperment. i also like their huge size.
as a minor bonus, when these cats shed it is mostly in clumps and very easy to pick up.
could i get these qualities in a shelter cat? probably. but i wouldn't know how to look for the low-allergy factor and it would take me a long time to find the others. with maine coons, i can go to the breeder and be primarily concerned with socialization and personality and pretty much know i'm going to get the rest.

i do feel guilty about the rescuing i could be doing...but not guilty enough to change what i'm doing. i would be open to a shelter dog if we were ready for a dog.

Huh. Interesting. Yes, that makes a lot of sense. Especially considering the fact that my parents' cat, who looks a lot like a maine coon, is really not all that social. I agree, as well, that a doglike cat is great, although having Mel cry from upstairs ("where have you been? why are you stopping downstairs?) while I'm looking through the mail-pile is occasionally disconcerting.

thanks!
yeah, i get frustrated with people who say they have maine coons...when they aren't pure bred, because there's really no way of knowing...it's about shelters trying to get people to buy...but it's false advertising. what you have is a domestic long hair and there's no way of knowing. you may have a great cat, but it's not a maine coon....and you wind up giving the wrong impression of what a maine coon is to all the people that don't know any better.
not that maine coons can't have personality issues...but it's the exception rather than the rule.
incidentally, i found some great breeders this morning with really friendly cats.

yeah...the frantic howling from upstairs when i go to bed (downstairs) is definitely an issue...and so is the "you're not paying enough attention to me i'm going to jump on your shoulders with my claws and purr in your ear" behavior...but better than some of the other issues.

Very true. Although I have to say I think I've finally gotten Mel to stop with the leaping up to my shoulders with his claws out, and I'm really glad of that. It was adorable when he weighed two pounds, but not so much now that he's twelve pounds.

exactly.
thankfully, madeleine only does it when i'm sitting in a computer chair and she's jumping from the arm of the chair to my shoulder - not from the ground.
