well i finished nearly everything i needed to get done while i was in va. plus a few things like applying for the marriage lisence that i didn't think i would be able to do. and i saw LOTS of people that i miss horribly and still didn't have time to see everyone i wanted to see.
we came home thursday and the 12 year old across the street who was watching our cats had left them DESPERATE for us. they had finished an entire container of food (which means she was feeding them WAY too much) and said 12 year old was feeding them straight store-bought food instead of mixed with luther's perscription (which naturally meant there was puke all over. dried puke that she had not even attempted to clean up. luther was matted with something and stank and cried desperately to be picked up every 5 minutes. the 12 year old also wanted 80 bucks for watching the cats. no fucking way. she will not be watching them again til she is older.
we cleaned the house and packed like mad because we had to leave the next day for wisconsin.
we got ross's friend deborah to look after them and left friday for i hadn't been camping in WAY too long. we met up with rebecca and michelle, and set up our site to find that we had forgotten a number of important things. i am officially creating a packing list for the next time we go camping. grrr. we forgot:
pillows
padding for under the sleeping bags
a tarp
lawn chairs
bungee cords
extra blankets
a decent sized mug for tea
a dishpan
batteries for my lamp
i guess those are the big things, but i'm used to camping as opposed to ross, who is used to canoeing in the boundary waters. and we have not yet negotiated about weight and what you bring on such a trip. we have different ideas about what one needs.
as it was we had a great time, because becca and michelle had some extras and because we went out and bought:
a rain shelter for the table
batteries for my big lamp
lawn chairs
a card table.
these things made things much more bearable because it was raining a LOT. we played cards and went hiking and got tipsy and ate lots of high protein food. we were lazy a lot, which i think everyone needed. we visited some caverns on the way back and that was neat. i like it that ross wants to do stuff like that with me. he has been unbelievably wonderful and affectionate. it was a good trip. and when we got back, the cats were like "oh yeah. you again". just how things should be.

yesterday was my birthday and it was lovely. several wonderful people called me (even some who weren't related to me). we got some issues with my car sorted out. ross got me some lovely flowers and we made fondue and gamed all evening. it was a little slow for ross, but i was having a great time. i am having some trouble figuring out when you use which dice (as are a few others in our group)...i imagine that will speed up over time.

Happy belated birthday! Yay for camping! And yes, I have a list I use every time I'm packing for camping - it's got everything I need for the harshest backcountry trip, and I just leave off whatever I don't need for the conditions I'm planning for. One too many times have I been out in the middle of absolutely nowhere only to realize I've forgotten to bring water or something similarly dire! ;-)

Glad to hear the cat ended up at least unharmed
