Field Organizer Job Description
We’ve started a new progressive organization to take our country in a different direction—and we need talented, hard-working grassroots organizers to help turn the tide. We’ll be in neighborhoods across America, talking with citizens and activating them on our campaigns. Will you join us?
2007-2008 Field Organizers will:
Build a political network. Field organizing is about building a base of support in a community that enables us to change the political climate and educate policy makers. Organizers will build coalitions with local, state, and national progressive organizations; develop relationships with elected officials and other decision-makers; and identify and mobilize concerned citizens around core progressive issues.
Generate membership and financial support by canvassing and canvass directing. Canvassing is reaching out to supportive citizens directly to engage them in our campaigns, by knocking on doors or finding them in busy social centers. It is a key method for developing the financial resources and political support we need to run successful campaigns. It is also one of the best tactics for developing the one-on-one communication skills necessary for effective organizing. Field organizers will direct summer canvass offices—recruiting, hiring, and training dozens of paid canvassers throughout the four-month campaign.
Build the organization and larger progressive movement by recruiting staff. Good organizers know that recruitment never ends, and our campaign will require hundreds of dedicated and skilled organizers. Each field organizer will help build our winning team by spending one day per week generating resumes, interviewing candidates, and telling our campaign story.
Generate media attention and build public awareness. Effective media outreach is often the best way to get our message to large numbers of people efficiently. Field organizers will plan and conduct at least one major news conference per month, meet with editorial boards and reporters throughout the region, conduct TV and radio interviews, and generate opinion editorials and letters to the editor.
Educate decision-makers using grassroots tactics. In order to promote key progressive causes, field organizers will demonstrate broad public support for our positions through letter writing drives, e-mail activism, and district meetings with Members of Congress and other decision-makers.
