Mar. 20th, 2007 09:44 pmafter many jealous moments of hearing from other people how wonderful their cinematic experiences have been, i am finally allowed to watch movies myself!
ross and i watched 300.
then tonight we watched pan's labyrinth.
ross really hated 300. i kinda liked it, despite the historical unreality.
i've read herodotus (who wrote the history the comic is based off of) and there are a few facts you should know.
1 leonidas was not born a greek. he became king of the spartans through marrying the right chick and her brother (the king) dying.
2 sparta really did send 300 men to battle the persian army - which was about as vast as the movie claimed.
3 sparta actually had a great deal of help from the other greeks.
4 the spartans who returned home alive were ridiculed and humiliated until they proved themselves in a later battle. cowardice was NOT tolerated.
5 women were CHATTEL in sparta. men and women did not live together, but in separate dormitories - even if they were married! if a man admired another's wife, he could negotiate with her husband for her to bare him a son.
6 Xerxes really did hate leonidas and fear the greeks in part because of sparta.
7 there is no mention in the history of the traitor being a hunchback.
8 there were NO monsters, elephants or rhinos, but the part about the "immortals" was real.
overall, i thought it was pretty good, but am disturbed about a pro-war movie coming out in our current political climate.
it didn't TOUCH pan's labyrinth.
the story, the cinematography, the brutal depiction of how proud and cruel people can be during war....i loved it that everything magical also had a sharp edge. it made it more believable. the end was a little abrupt...but i also thought that was fitting, given the circumstances
