Sep. 8th, 2006 08:19 pmi love the week following a long weekend. it always feels so much shorter and easier.
in fact, i could do with all of my weekends being 3 days.
today i finished up everything on the agenda for the week and earned my second "atta' girl" from my boss in as many days. also i met a cool guy in the IT department who claimed he needed a purchasing mistress.
teehee. we chatted and he gave me a bad story about monkeys that made me laugh enough that i will forward it on to
pixiecup and her friend pete. pete looks like a monkey.
because it's cool to use the word conundrum.
i have been considering what to do with my job situation.
the place i work pays really well and the people are nice. there are complimentary donuts or fruit every friday and i can get away with dressing down a bit because it is so cold. also there is a warehouse. for some reason i like working in businesses with attached warehouses.
on the other hand, the commute sucks, i freeze my tits off while i'm there and some of the company policies SUCK.
for example random drug tests for everyone
they reserve the right to search you/your car w/out warning (does this strike anyone else as unconstitutional?)
they have bad policies regarding vacation. they only give you a week to start and then they don't pay sick leave for the first 8 hours. if you want to get paid for that time you have to use a vacation day.
....but it pays really well and the people are nice.
so here's my plan. my supervisor already says i'm 80% trained and that i need to talk to randy. he gets a say in whether or not they hire me, but the final say belongs to randy - a decent guy even if he does like sub-arctic offices.
next week i will talk to randy and find out what they can offer me. most of my friends and family are on the east coast. i require the ability to take unpaid vacation. also i would like to earn more. if they can afford to pay volt services on top of what they pay me, they can certainly offer me more.
i will not make any promises about how long i will stay. the company is "at will" and promises don't mean anything regardless of how nice they are. also this frees me from guilt.
i will also be continuing my job-search for something actually in my field.
i had my volunteer interview with children's home society and family services. my first day is next tuesday. i will be playing with small children in the evenings maybe twice a month. this will improve my resume and be fun for me. i have impure motives.
i also contacted a career coach who i met at annual conference this week. he has weekly coffee with a group that fights homelessness. he said he will give me a call after he meets with them.
i joined the church choir this week. i miss there being more men. and i miss eileen gunther. the director is young and pretty, but not terribly personable. we are doing some really pretty pieces...but i can't help but feel something is missing in the dynamics of the choir members...maybe i'm just used to praying together. i dunno. it is good to be in a singing group again.
