I guess the metaphor works more as a good metaphor for the fundamentalists themselves than the church as a whole. They flail about, but in the end they do nothing but hurt themselves and others. And make those outside their reach take a step further away to avoid contact with them.

The churches I've gone to since I can remember were mostly non-denominational. My father was ordained as a Baptist minister and still has an active ministry for the deaf. My parents met while in Bible College in Missouri, so they raised us all in a religious (though not overly strict) way. As an adult, I do not agree with them on a lot of issues, they and most of my family are far more conservative than I.

I have personally never claimed a specific denomination, I feel like the factioning and labels are devisive and counterproductive. The way fundamentalism has been equated with all of Christianity makes me pretty sick. The God that people like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson worship is a pretty stark contrast to mine, but I have to deal with people making this assumption that I'm just like them. It is bigotry, just like any other form, and should not be acceptable.
