i'm confused - what do you mean "what gender is attached to what word"? in my (admittedly not comprehensive) experience, lesbiand refer to each other as 'wives', and gay men as 'hubsands,' assuming either term is used.
as an interesting note, in the UK, everybody just says partner. gay, straight, bi, married, engaged, dating - unless you actually know someone's exact status, the default is partner. i use 'husband' and 'partner' interchangely when referring to ross. no one gets confused. or cares.
