this weekend was full of good things.
friday night i went out to merlin's rest for drunken knit night. it was a hoot. i met some really great people, had some fish and chips and enjoyed myself immensely. i was expecting irish music (as advertised), but that didn't happen and by the time it was supposed to happen i was ready to go home anyway. i made progress on my maple leaf socks and learned what a dork-light is and how awesome one can be for knitting.
also i had a good long talk with my wonderful ceci, who is now MARRIED to ben closs (CONGRATULATIONS!!!). my dad married them quick in my parents family room so that they could get arrangements made for being a military family on base when they move out to san fran. the "real" wedding will be out there.

saturday was the irish fair. i sorted and culled my knitting stash early in the morning, and stopped by jory and simona's before heading down and had a really nice couple of hours with them. i don't see enough of them. jory gave me a ride down to the fair, which was quite nice of him.
the best thing ever was finding out that my name in irish is "froach." this isn't exciting until you understand that it is pronounced "freak!" i can't stop laughing about that. i got a flask i've been wanting forever, but mostly i listened to music (the tannahill weavers and mcinnis' kitchen impressed me a lot)and talked to people i didn't know. i hung out with ryan a bit and he introduced me to some gamers i hadn't met before. they seemed very cool, and like they might liven up the game quite a bit. i might have to go check it out to see.
i got a call from ross saying he was going to be home for a bit so i ran home to catch some time with him. we had dinner together and then i went back to the guthrie with him to see the show. i was too much behind the console to have a great view, but it was okay and the show was great. very moving. the man playing pa and the girl playing laura were really fantastic and there were some really clever things done with arranging the story. the woman who played laura in the tv show plays ma in this production and i could really see her getting choked up about it at the end, which was cool. ross introduced me to the conductor and the arranger, both of whom are really plus people. he is hoping i will be able to take monday afternoon off to hang out with them and talk to them for real. mary mitchel(the arranger) runs a non-profit out of nyc hooking up artists with kids in poor conditions all over the world and wants us to get a chance to network. she seems really cool.
maybe the best thing was getting to understand some of the process of ross's daily life though. this was still a preview. opening hasn't happened yet, so i got to see people coming up and giving ross and the rest of the sound department notes and sit in on the meeting after the show and how they make their decisions. it was neat.

sunday i went and checked out a new church. ross pointed out a umc church that is even closer to me than the one i was going to and dissatisfied with. i could probably bike there if i wanted to end up at church all gross and sweaty. i am so glad i went. it is a mostly older crowd, but there was a baptism and a youth scholarship presentation, so it's not all old. the people were super-friendly and welcoming and came and introduced themselves, but not in a you're-new-we'll-put-you-in-the-spotlight kind of way. the pastor is a big teddy-bear of a man and made an appointment to meet with me and show me around the church and such in the future. i had a nice chat with him.
most of all. they need me. a woman went out of her way to come sit by me and tell me how much they need someone to help with the youth. she said she had been praying about it and when i showed up (a younger person with a christian education)she took the opportunity to tell me all about it in case i'm willing. she also practically invited me to join her bluegrass band without an audition(which was quite flattering, although i haven't heard them yet either)...i'm not sure how much i can help. i'm really hoping to get a job that might take my time on sundays and wednesday nights. but i can't read the future and maybe i'll get a different job instead. what i do know is that people seemed ready to use my skills and be my friend at this church. something i was missing at the other place. i will definitely go back. this place feels like a answer to what i have been praying for in a lot of ways. i just need to feel it out a little bit (in order to believe it is what it seems), and do some discernment work to figure out what i can give them.

i got to talk with [livejournal.com profile] xerotic for a good long while and catch up (and threaten to steal his booty since he threatened to deny me booty in the first place - it's only fair). it is always awesome to talk with the surma.
and i got a message from the cat lady. she is hoping we can come out tonight to see if we want one of her kittens!!!! that would be so awesome in every way.
it seems like way more happened this weekend than could possibly fit into a weekend. i am back at my morning crunches again (although only 60 this morning), but so far that is the only thing good about the weekend being over. i would like another 2 days, please.

lol....you have to understand. crap acrylic that i hadn't kept the ball-bands for that i bought over 10 years ago was infecting my poor stash like gangrene. it had to be excised lest the whole stash be lost! it was a mission of mercy (and space-saving).

besides, good will will make good use of it.

lol i've had some unofficial drunken knit nights--they are definitely fun! I got some work done on a child's sweater I started, uh, last year, this weekend... the socks I've been working on got kind of tangled and some stitches slipped off the needles and got messed up, so I'm procrastinating sorting that out as long as possible...

the show sounds really neat!! I'm assuming ross is a) your husband and b) a sound technician for a local theatre?

yay kitties!! are they any particular breed of cat or domestics? I worked at a vet's for a couple of years as a receptionist and it was one of the best experiences of my life!

the show is really neat. and yes, ross is my husband and the master audio engineer..but the guthrie is more than just a little dinky local theater. it's an internationally reknown theater in the guiness book of world records for having a huge cantilever. it's a big deal in the twin cities.

and yeah...i would Love to be the kind of person who gets shelter cats, but i just can't. i am in love with maine coons. i could probably get SOME of the qualities i like in them from a shelter cat, but there's no way i'd get all of them.

Ha, I think we will be good friends. ;) He's the most awesome cat in the world!! I almost choked on my ho-ho when I read that you are in love with maine coons.

I have learned that I can not knit drunk. I make mistakes and then get frogging happy, creating more work for myself than I accomplish. I will however treat my achomg shoulder muscles to a good glass of wine, post knitting. This was of course in the past and possibly in the future, but not in my present.

Where will your friend be stationed in the San Fran area, we're currently in Monterey? If she has any questions, concerns about military life I'd be happy to answer them, although I don't know all the answers.

i can't really do anything drunk...but i hardly ever get drunk and certainly not friday night. that's just what it's called. i think i had 3 drinks in 4.5 hours.
i don't know where my friend will be yet. i'm not even sure SHE knows. but i will ask. it is a very generous offer.
