You'd really recommend Huston Smith? I suppose its a good enough primer, but I've never cottoned to him.
And I'd also like to add on Hero with a 1000 Faces by Joseph Campbell. A necessary book for understanding so much of what goes on in folklore, mythology, and literature in general. Yes, forced down many peoples' throats. Yes, quoted and misquoted far too often. But there is a reason for that.
