there is actually proof that they can be trained quite well...but you have to work with what motivates them and be VERY consistant. cats are gamblers. if something happens 1 in 20 times that they like, they will keep doing it. also i hear clickers help a lot.
my cat sits up and begs for treats. she also used to fetch. she almost always comes when she's called (80% of the time is pretty good for a cat).
