2eclipse: (thinking)
so one of my co-workers husband just had knee surgery.
and he died. the funeral is next week. i never met either of them, but i can't get this song out of my head that we are singing in choir for all saint's day.
it's words are a poem everyone in [livejournal.com profile] sunmother's generation seems to know, but i'd never heard before.

in rememberance - anonymous

do not stand at my grave and weep.
i am not there - i do not sleep.
i am a thousand winds that blow.
i am the diamond glint on snow.
i am the sunlight on ripened grain.
i am the gentle morning rain.
and when you wake in the morning's hush
i am the sweet uplifting rush
of birds in circled flight.
i am the soft stars that shine at night.
do not stand at my grave and cry.
i am not there.
i did not die.

it is clear to me that my friends know more about poetry than i do. therefore i have a challenge.

when i was in 10th grade, my history teacher gave us poems to memorize for extra credit. he just liked them. i still know one of them, and that it is titled "the wasted day", but i have no clue who the author is. can someone help? google can't.

i wasted a day-
hotly, i haste.
all the calm hours
i gashed and defaced.

let me forget.
let me depart.
sleep for my boat
and sail through the dark.

(yeah, i know the last bit makes no sense)

also who are your favorite poets?
some of my favorites: george herbert, kahlil gibran, edna st. vincent millay, sharon olds, james dickey, mary o'neil, dr. seuss, and baudelaire
