fantastic frickin' weekend....
Mar. 13th, 2006 12:03 pmfull of all of the things i love.
friday night ross and i went to go see don giovanni at the ordway.
the conductor made some interesting choices that i found compelling with the music, but i also felt like she didn't give the strings enough time in places where it detracted from the poinancy of the music....it evened things out. the music was good, but not fantabulous.
the performers were pretty much in the same category. don giovanni, leporello and don otavio were brilliant, the sopranos flatted A LOT during the first half of the show and donna anna sounded like a chicken clucking during one duet with don otavio. this was a shame. but they were better during the second act and the show itself is of course, marvelous. opera is confirmed as one of those things i am glad i do to enrich my life. not every performance has to be perfect.
the next day we watched battlestar.....sigh....i can't believe THAT was the last show of the season! they are EVIL!!!! then it was time for shaun and thistle's.....well, they refused to really call it a marriage because thistle is a liberated woman who doesn't want to feel tied down and had to be convinced to have any kind of ceremony at all, but they exchanged rings, got up in front of people and said how much they love each other, had a big meal and dancing and celebrated 5 years together. i kept going up to them, hugging them and saying "happy relationship day!" in an impossibly cheerful voice. :) they have a wonderful relationship and i was a joy to be included in the celebration for it.
it was a very good time. there were lots of out-of-towners who we don't get to see often who were there and we also met several new friends. i spent the evening chatting with an atheist astronomer from chicago who had been in the peace core in malawi. he was pretty cool.
chris and theresa stayed with us that night which was great. we don't get to see enough of them. theresa went to church with me (kind of a weird service that i'm not sure how i feel about). then we went to a brunch over at shaun and thistle's and spent the afternoon playing arkam horror, this fabulous board game based on the h.p. lovecraft books. it is a cooperative sort of game where you have to keep your town from being eaten by hastur or some other monster. there were about 10 of us playing and we just barely one the game. there was lots of joking and laughing and being very silly.
we may have met a few more friends in the area to rp with. :)
then we came home and watched old highlander episodes for a while before meeting dawn for dinner at ruby tuesday's....
a wonderful, satisfying weekend.
