thank you for the well-wishes.
the job interview went well this morning. i got there early and feel like i made a very positive impression on the hr lady, director and associate director. i was warm, funny (they laughed anyway) and i THINK i appeared competent. the director kept smiling at the questions i asked as though they were just what she was hoping i would say. the associate director was more practical and hard to impress(she wanted more than passion and interest), but i think i succeeded.
i also found out that there are 5 candidates total for this position, it pays better than i thought it would and is very generous in terms of time off (3 weeks paid vacation plus holidays and 3 extra vacation days if you're not sick).
i should find out next week if they want to run second interviews or if they are just going to hire.
i promptly came home and took a nap.

i am now up to my ears in prosperity theology (which is utterly revolting to me) in my paper and refuting the parts of it that suck (which is quite enjoyable). ross is out with the boys and therefore not making noise and distracting me.  if i am a good girl and get a couple more pages done, i will be allowed to go knit with the girls for a while.

Sounds good. Is prosperity theology that one that a bunch of rich old white men came up with, saying that they prospered because of righteousness, and that poverty was punishment for sin?

pretty close.
the guys who made it popular (jim bakker and jimmy swaggart) are old guys now. but it is a little less focused on hell and more focused on making you rich.
the premise is that you are god's child and he wants us to be happy and that means making money. if you give to the church you will become rich. TIME put out a really good article on it.

i think this theology is bunk for 3 reasons 1)it is mutually exclusive with christ's example, ministry and commands, which were universally in favor of generosity to poor people, set an example of self-privation and emphasized reward in the next life, not this one 2)the passages they use are interpretable in ways that jive with christ's ministry instead of conflicting with it - if you let go of prosperity theology's motives and 3)it actually encourages people to be sinful in the form of selfishness and hoarding. i think paul and wesley have it right when they say wealth is a good thing- but it must be used rightly and that means sharing with financial equality as a model.

The real crime is...

The real crime is that the prosperity gospel is often preached to 3rd world countries, wherein the missionaries would preach that if you believe, you will obtain wealth and prosperity. They 'became Christians' based on promises of wealth and riches, and not because they were led to Christ through the Holy Spirit. Some denominations still practice this method of evangelism, ensuring that their missionaries go oversees, and look very, very wealthy.

Also, as an interesting side note, Mrs. HJA, Jim and Tammy Fae graduated from my alma matter, and actually donated the money for one of our skyways. When the scandal hit, the President of the college at the time called security at whatever A.M. it became public and had them tear down the plaque. One of our skyways was the Jim and Tammy Fae Baker Skyway... Funny, huh? :)
