so one of my co-workers husband just had knee surgery.
and he died. the funeral is next week. i never met either of them, but i can't get this song out of my head that we are singing in choir for all saint's day.
it's words are a poem everyone in [livejournal.com profile] sunmother's generation seems to know, but i'd never heard before.

in rememberance - anonymous

do not stand at my grave and weep.
i am not there - i do not sleep.
i am a thousand winds that blow.
i am the diamond glint on snow.
i am the sunlight on ripened grain.
i am the gentle morning rain.
and when you wake in the morning's hush
i am the sweet uplifting rush
of birds in circled flight.
i am the soft stars that shine at night.
do not stand at my grave and cry.
i am not there.
i did not die.

One of my favorite poems ever.

The one that stuck in my head from childhood goes:

Life is the narrow veil
between the barren peaks of two eternities
We strive in vain to reach beyond the heights;
we cry aloud, but the only answer
is the echo of a wailing cry.

Yet in the night of death,
hope sees a star.
And listening love can hear the rustle of a wing.

I've always loved that poem. I never knew it'd been set to music, though.
