whew. you have totally been exposed to the rabidly evangelical sorts of christians. sometimes i think of going to a more conservative church once a week just to promote discussion. but apparently it takes a mere time change to make me miss service with my own congregation, so i'd better stick with that for the nonce. iirc? if you are talking about bonhoeffer i absolutely agree with you on his brilliance. i did a seminar on him last spring with a guy who studied under karl barth (bonhoeffer's teacher) and wrote the first book on bonhoeffer's theology!
my answer to what is a christian? you will be disappointed to learn. a Christian is a believer in Christ as the son of God, bringing the message of God's new covenant of love with mankind. A christian is a disciple of Christ, striving to live thier lives drawing nearer to God through Christ.
but that is uninterpreted. if you like, i will send you a copy of my credo paper - basically an interpretation of what it means to be a christian. i will warn you it is long.
