saturday...
ross had a computer call on the way out to montevideo and we stopped over at jeff's house to help him out.
he is a nice guy, but i'm really more excited about having met his wife. she is a young 60-ish interior decorator who has also just finished an mts at united seminary. she works with nuns in the city and her decorating work is mainly just to keep her theological passions funded. she also reads good fiction. we talked for a long time. it was very enjoyable, but she could also be a really good professional contact for me.
ross and i had a nice drive out to see his folks. i'm always so pleased at how well we travel together. the firing range was closed so we went out to one of his dad's friends places for firing practice. shooting a 22 is scarily easy/enjoyable. i practiced on a 22, a 243 from 100 yards and a shotgun from about 45....the exciting thing is that i hit the target every time but one, and that was with the shotgun. that thing has a nasty kick. ross's dad says the next thing is to go (prairie)dog hunting in south dakota. it sounds cruel, but at least when they are shot, the farmers don't poison them and wind up killing the coyotes, wolves and foxes in the area as well. as for me, i've got a certain amount of paranoia aboutour country going to war and being short on resources. i want to know how to get food if i need it. my soap-making stems from similar motivation.
i have been listening to the hair soundtrack today and realizing how formative it was for me during high school. so many of the ideals i still hold to are expressed in an essentially silly musical that just has damn fine music. especially the deep sorrow re:war and the idea that our lives and our selves are the best things we have for loving each other and solving our problems. i was so angry at the government and big corporations for setting up such broken systems. as an adult, i understand how much more complicated our social issues are, but i still believe in fixing them with the same tools.
