compared to the other 2 movies, this movie was a big disappointment, left on it's own....it was good but not great.

toby mcguire and kirsten dunst have more challenging acting roles in this movie than they did in the other movies...and i have to say i think they do really well with that. the special effects are great and i think the director made good choices with what he had....it is the writing of this movie that gives me problems. you should definitely know before you go in that mj sings and spidey dances in this movie. i think if i hadn't read some reviews and been prepared for that, i would have liked it less.

this movie has a cheese factor not present in the other two movies, which was disappointing to me. they make the singing and dancing fit pretty well into the plot - and it does what it is supposed to do in terms of telling you about changes in character - which is why i forgive it for being cheesy.
spiderman is also supposed to be a wise-cracking character. we got that in the first movie but it wasn't present much in the second. in this movie it only came out when parker was playing "dark spiderman". i was uncomfortable with that.
there was also a LOT of spidey in front of the american flag. i know that those shots are true to the comic, but frankly, they turn my stomach. there is too much blind nationalism out there, and it feels like flag-porn to me. it's sad, but i don't believe i'm the only one who feels this way.
my biggest problem is that there are several GAPING plot holes. mary jane forgives peter parker way too easily for belief at the end - right after he has interrupted her performance and upstaged her YET again. worse, sandman still has a sick kid when spiderman forgives him for killing his uncle. it is also never explained why the guy who becomes venom will lose his whole life if he is no longer a photographer.
this is a long movie. this was not a problem for me because i am oblivious to such things, but it was a problem for several of the people i saw it with. they tried to pack a LOT in to one movie. i understand why they did it. they need to have spiderman NEEDING help. and this is a story about forgiveness and they need all those characters to show that. but i think that they either needed to make it go another 1/2 hour so that they could do the story justice, or they needed to just re-write the thing.

when i saw the film (packed opening night theater) everyone burst out laughing when spidey posed in front of the flag.
