this is an amazing analysis of women's sizes in patterns in clothing. it was a breath of fresh air for me to read.
i'd love to hear what you costuming people out there think of it. ahem [livejournal.com profile] wanderingbastete and [livejournal.com profile] ibukij

Sewing pattern sizes are frequently on crack.
I'm a fairly thin woman and I have issues with them.
They don't tend to be proportioned normally, Usually I
need to buy a size bigger and then trim it down in the
bust and waist to get the correct hip size.

Also sometimes they are NOT at all measured correctly.
We just had an issue where my friend got a patter
supposedly her measurements, cut it out, and it was
a good inch too small.

I maintain that sizing for both manufacturing and patterns is
slightly haphazard just to make us all insane.

*snerk*
not a long trip for most of us anyway.

That's definitely an interesting article. It's always aggravated me that pattern sizes are so ridiculous - it's like they want us to feel even more horrible about our bodies than we likely already do because society sucks to begin with! I've gotten used to it, but I always feel bad when I'm making something for someone else, and they're horrified by the size I'm cutting...

personally i think you rock for making stuff for other people at all!

I enjoy it. It's a bit stressful, because I want it to be perfect and it's harder to do things for a body that's not right at your fingertips to try stuff on, but I love getting to do things I might not otherwise do, and seeing how awesome they look in it is a great reward.

Everyone thinks I'm insane for planning to make my bridesmaids' dresses AND my own wedding dress, but I'm looking forward to it. And since I'm starting NOW, with eleven months to go, I'm working on the assumption I'll have plenty of time to do it all without getting stressed. :)

i think there's a significant likelihood i'll be making my dress for my sister's wedding. and my sister's veil. and probably doing her alterations as well. and that's all because clothes suck.

(so *i* don't think you're insane!)
