so last week...

i started getting what ross calls "PFO" letters from jobs. Please Fuck Off.
one of them was from that asst. chaplain position i really wanted.

i'm not terribly down about this. i kinda expected it.
i'm also getting really fucking stir-crazy despite the home improvement projects i've taken on.
so i am debating the different part-time positions i could take at retail places just to get out of the house (and hopefully get a sweet discount somewhere to support at least one of my habits). we are getting to the place where we need the money as well, but i don't want to take on something i'm going to feel guilty for leaving. something only part-time because i want to be home to see my husband every night and because i still need to get resumes out and have time to interview. some of the things i am thinking about:

coffee shop (mostly because i've always wanted to learn to work an espresso machine.
michael's
joannes (there is a superjoanne's or whatever you call it here that has craft stuff as well as fabric)
home depot (but only if i can work in the garden section and i hear they start laying off in june)
half-price books (a used bookstore in the area - the most fun, but also the most dangerous)

any input? suggestions?

I worked at a couple of different JoAnn's (in Ohio and PA) many years ago. It wasn't that bad, though I rarely actually made any money - a combination of the pay being crap (this might've changed since then) and the big shiney employee discount. ;-)

sigh...my first job was like that. the manager was cool and encouraged me to dye my hair blue, but my 4.50/hr paycheck was LOUSY....the cd's ate it very quickly.

coffee shops are easy to leave, b/c people expect to swirl in and out of them, & should be fun & dynamic while you're there.

michael's or joanne's would inspire you to do & make things all the time--might be harder to leave that behind, but you could keep it as a seasonal gig for extra holiday money (& holiday discounts!)

home depot sounds like it's got too many qualifiers. i'd drop the application in the box anyway, but not worry too much about it.

used bookstores are places you move in & make a home of. 'course, if you come back to browse & read & borrow, that might work just as well. i don't think that's dangerous. potentially addictive, & risky b/c you'd be sad to be told no, but not dangerous. :)

btw i can't believe you're listening to geg. nobody does that but me. more awesomeness points for you!!!!!!!!!

My personal opinion is this:
If you need the money, look into a job that pays a bit more, but may not be your first choice. I don't know what qualifications you're placing on yourself for this, but working in a place that you might spend just as much money as you make can be very detrimental if you're looking for extra income. There are a number of things that can be mentally engaging without being "Dangerous".

On the other hand, if you're just looking for a touch of supplimental income, and to get you motivated and working outside of the home, find the job you really think you'd enjoy. Evaluate the jobs on what kind of happiness they would bring to you, and whichever seems to be the most alluring, go for it! A deliberation, on paper, about the pro's and con's of each place might help you decide which might be best suited in this case. And really, I'd personally go ahead and apply for anything interesting, and just wait to see what comes in with an offer... then see where they fall on the chart. The idea would be to get a few offers in the same week, ask for a few days to "talk to your husband and decide if this would work" of each, and once you've gotten enough responses, pick off your list.

you are so thoughtful...
this is mostly to get me doing something out of the house and give me a bit of a schedule. the money will help, but this is not a situation where either ross or myself wants me to whore myself out to the highest bidder. something fun is important if i can't get something in my field. writing things out on paper might help. then again, i could just go fill out applications at whim and make the decision after they are all crawling at my feet in hopes that i will deign to notice them!!!
