socks, skis and peer gynt

yesterday was great if somewhat tiring.
i slept a lot. A LOT.
got confident with knitting socks on circs, went cross country skiing (not far because i started to get sore pretty quickly, but i got a good workout), went grocery shopping(badly needed), put everything away, showered, helped ross load a mitre saw into my backseat for scott to borrow, and went out with ross, scott, heidi and the girls to see peer gynt at the guthrie.
i liked the show. it was a lot like eating overcooked squid. not entirely pleasant, but extremely interesting, and so chewy that you have to work at it til it's digestable before you can swallow it. some parts were really funny, and it certainly wasn't a doll's house....but ibsen did something i'm beginning to recognize as typical of him. he feeds you a lot of seemingly meaningless frivolity and then turns around and deepens the meaning so thick it takes a while to understand it all in the last 10 minutes of the show. i need to look up the last words of the play, because i missed about half of what the actor said and i think it would add even further to my perceptions what ibsen was trying to say about women completing men and it's impact on our final reckoning.
i got to breifly see planetjake during the intermission, which was great. i wanted to go out for drinks, but i'm still feeling so tired from being ill....that and i really need a lot more b vitamins in my diet.

anyway,
here are my brother amos socks. i love them. the lace is turning out so neatly!

here is a better picture of the snakey nutkin socks i made. i like them a lot. they are comfortable. but i think in the future i will take more trouble to make my striped socks match.


and here is a problem i'm having.
have any of ya'll messed with brioche stitch? i'm working on the hat from weekend knitting, and not only am i not getting the lovely poofy brioche part to turn out, but i'm also getting a definite slant....and i'm SURE i'm following the directions...but maybe i'm not understanding them correctly.

having never done brioche, i can't really help you figure out why yours is slanting, but my theory is that perhaps your yo's aren't evenly over one another? if one is accidentally consistantly to the right or left of the previous, you'd bias. *shrugs* outside of that, they're simply lovely, and i believe i'll be doing a mini brioche toothpick knit to honor your adventurism. :)

...so i've been thinking about it and i think i might be doing my yo's all the same way....knitwise instead of purlwise some of the time. do you think that could be causing it?

i like the dual colors together and i would hate to have to give up on this project and find another pattern for ross.

Love the dark red socks and even though orange is my least favorite colour, your nutkin socks are soooo beautiful!

Sorry I can't help with brioche stitch because every time I've tried it I've given up in frustration. But I like to eat brioche. Does that count? ;)

the dark red socks are even prettier in person. if you click on the picture to enlarge you can see a little bit what i mean. there are lovely raspberry and chocolate tones mixed in with the red and black and the lace pattern i am using makes it even cooler. i'm really just thrilled with these. they've gained a good inch and a half today.

glad you like the nutkin socks. the long winter up here has made me thirsty for bright colors and these just hit the spot for me.

i've never tried brioche. it's good?

My stitches are running slanted too. I noticed it starting to happen when I found myself knitting or purling two slipped stitches together--one from previous row and row before that, if that's possible? I think I'm supposed to be knitting or purling a slip stitch and yarn over stitch together. I'm pretty sure I'm doing the yarn over properly. I find the brioche stitch to be very demanding. One stitch off and it's all over. Time to add more stitch markers. I've restarted this project more times than I can count, but I'm determined.
