what a weekend!

so friday i went out to jon and tessa's new place in st. cloud. that is about an hour away for those of you who don't know.
shaun and thistle, adam serling and mike....who's last name i forget...were there. we had dinner and played a couple games of robo rally before shaun, thistle and tessa needed to go to bed. the rest of us played settlers of catan until about 1am.
the next morning we made crepes and then parted ways to run errands. we needed a set of jenga and more coffee and a vacuum cleaner and tim (who had arrived and who i found out is a lutheran pastor and host of "clericon") needed to get a 3 year anniversary present for his wife. year 3 is the "leather" year. it was amusing to come up with ideas. but he has already planned to have a strip of leather cooked in oil and served to her. :) i got a copy of SET, which is a great card game that really stretches your brain in interesting ways.
when we got back together we played a few games until everyone else got back and then proceeded on to Dread Jenga.
this is an RP game with no dice. adam GMed for us. basically, you come up with a minimalist, stereotype horror character. then for any action you want to take, you pull two pieces off the jenga tower and set them on top. this is a good trick for creating a sense of suspense in the game. lots of terrible things can happen to your character, but you don't die unless you knock the tower over. then the whole thing is set up again, but with three pieces removed for every player out of the game. theatrix rules apply - in other words, if you ASK if something is there (say a light or a fire extinguisher) then it isn't. if you just say "i grab the fire extinguisher and bash the zombie's brains in" then it happened just as you said (although you may have to pull for it). this was immense fun. we also played a few rounds of xactica, which is the weirdest trick-taking card game ever. very cool.

after driving home and changing clothes i head out to the guthrie. the opening gala was quite something. there were a huge variety of performances. some of them were more to my taste than others, but the quality was very good all around and it was more a matter of my preference than actual talent. there were monologues, sonnets read, memoirs from a couple of actors who worked at the guthrie at it's beginning, a spoof on the architect to the tune of modern major general, a gospel choir, the minnesota symphony orchestra and several other events. and that was just at the main thrust. the sweet colleens put on a wonderful performance that scarcely anyone got to see over on the proscenium stage and trailer trash was playing somewhere else and from what i heard, did pretty well. i really got to see why ross and his co-workers have been busting ass for the last month or so. i'm also really glad this is almost done with in favor of the flavors of chaos normal for theatre production.
i have a juggling lesson this afternoon (offered by the owner of the local air traffic store) and then i am going back in to the guthrie for this evenings round of productions and fireworks.
