awesome day!

i've been doing really well this week.
not exactly sure why, but i'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

yesterday i preserved limes (and 1 lemon)
i sliced them into sixths ALMOST all the way through, packed them with salt and stuck them in a boiled container with salt and lemon&lime juice.
they will sit for 2 weeks before they are ready. they should keep for a year.
if you will remember, amy got in trouble for having pickled limes in school in little women.
i am very interested to see if they are truly fantastic. i love sour things, so i expect they will be good.
ross and i successfully resolved conflict re: what kind of humidifier we will get with no one's ego bruised and made margharitas and had chipotle and re-watched batman begins. i am looking forward to the new one.

ross's surgery is tomorrow. not sure what time yet. i am having an emotional conflict about whether i am more worried about him, or more happy to have a day off...but it isn't bothering me too much. just enough for me to pay attention.

Nerd moment!

I read this: "if you will remember, amy got in trouble for having pickled limes in school in little women."

and immediately thought, wait, wasn't it regular limes? Hmm..I should check.

Yay little women. :)

Yay for you for preserving limes & lemons. I read a thing recently that said there's a lemon shortage going on because of crop issues.

I am thinking the good thoughts for the upcoming Anderson surgeries!

Hah! I had exactly the same thought! I remember the bit about the lime, but don't recall that it was a pickled lime... And now I'm intensely curious both whether it was indeed a pickled lime, and how such a thing might taste. I've only ever tasted pickled, well, pickles, so of course now I'm trying to figure out how to combine the taste of a pickle with that of a lime (which of course isn't how pickling works, which I know intellectually)...

Yay girly literature geek solidarity! :D

truly.
and yeah for pickled limes!

It *is* in fact pickled limes in the book! A google search revealed the chapter online (yay public domain books), and confirmed. Gotta love the internet - always ready with an answer long before I would've had time to go home and check my copy of the book. :-D

yup, although i think she only specifically refers to them as pickled once or twice. the rest of the time she just calls them limes.

Yeah, the first mention is of pickled, and there's another several paragraphs later, but otherwise it's just "limes." So [livejournal.com profile] ashoe and I can probably be forgiven for not remembering. ;-)

of course you can.
the only reason i remember is because i am a nut for sour things and immediately started drooling over the idea.

they are pickled, although i don't think she calls them that more than once or twice.
i didn't know about the lemon/lime shortage. i got this idea in part from the book and in part from a radio program on how to make them.
thank you for your well-wishes. i'm sure i'll be on the blog while i'm recovering if i am not too stoned....or maybe it will be more if i AM stoned...hard to say.
