i haven't written a real post in a while.

it has mostly been a good week.
i am remembering how much happier i am when i excercise (biked 10miles yesterday) and bemoaning the fact that my skin can't take more than about an hour in the sun even with 50 sunblock. even that much time leaves me with a slight sunburn so that i can't do it every day.. stupid doxycycline. i remember when 10 miles was nothing to me. my pride wants me to be doing 20 every time i go out.

the grass is coming up on our newly fixed lawn and it looks SO much better (pictures will be forthcoming as soon as i fix my camera battery charger). the tomatoes are going gangbusters and we may actually get a few strawberries.

i have done 4 informational interviews. the first two were great. the second two sucked. i blame the methodist church.
i talked to cindy gregorson (one of the minneapolis district superintendents) and sally johnson (deacon at hennepin UMC). both of them were nice ladies. neither of them were any help.
apparently because the UMC up here has no money, there is also no help for deacons to find work. sure, people have some contacts in the non-profit sector, but it isn't actually part of their job to help deacons looking for work. in fact, most of the deacons are not actually working outside the church. instead they are doing the work of elders in congregations that already have 2 elders.....this is very frustrating to me.
worse yet, deacons only meet annually with their DS and have cursory attachment to a church because they already have a supervisor in their job. as a result of this, there is no structure in place to make use of deacons as an informational source. i have no problems with deacons not answering to the church as much as elders, but the waste of them as a resource apalls me.
i continue to apply for things and cross my fingers.

i have discovered that i love to knit socks.
i knit a pair for my mother for mother's day and after some initial figuring-out, i am working on my third pair. pictures will be forthcoming as soon as i fix my camera battery charger....

i barely see ross these days as tech for 1776 is in full swing. we get a few moments in the morning after he rejoins the world of the living (i'm up before he is) and sometimes at night. but monday we went to see
pirates of the carribean 3 together. i loved it. i thought it was the best one yet. mainly because kiera knightly and orlando bloom seem to have taken acting lessons. i absolutely hated the first movie because the performance values between orlando/kiera and depp/rush were so wide. difference in quality of acting is very distracting to me. it pulls me out of my willing-suspension-of-disbelief like nobody's business. but the second movie took away most of kiera and orlando's lines and allowed orlando to do what he does best - move really well. i thought this one was even better. i was particularly fond of the way kiera immitated johnny depp's acting style for her role. i thought it worked well. i wish there had been more of chow yun phat. ross enjoyed it, but liked it least of the three movies so far. the unexplained things- like how calypso had power in davy jone's locker and how she could raise barbosa - bothered him. to me those things were unimportant compared to consistent quality of acting.

i have been having GREAT fun with my new character thanks to [profile] sidhedevil, [profile] kurosawa2005 and [profile] rumpleteazaer. [profile] ibukij, [profile] rojirand a few others gave me advice too, but i haven't had a chance to follow up on it yet. it is so nice not to feel burnt out. it is lovely to not be bored, and i am learning a lot about combat - lessons i am ashamed to admit, i played over 3 years without. ventrue get other people to do their killing.

I thought that PotC3 was consistently good fun. I loved the Davy Jones Locker sequence -- Dave said, "It was like they let the art student direct for twenty minutes!"

Also, socks are great! I just learned how to knit a sock from the toe up. This is fun, but I need to learn how to bind off in a stretchy manner, as the ankle is not stretchy enough for me to get my foot into. Oops.

It's funny, I played a political Tremere for the first 5 years of my larping experience (not OWbN, though) and I just about 'never' got into combat. I only used thaum about once a year as well. Then my next character is a pacifist. I'm dedicated to making my next character a combat character, but after larping for 7 years and not knowing how to initiate a challenge, it's a little funny. Combat sucks...and hopefully you can help me figure it out when I might need it!

anything i know will be at your disposal.

i liked the silliness of lots of jacks and LOVED the running joke with the peanut.

so far i ONLY know how to knit toe-up socks. they seem to make the most sense. i am having the same problem as brenda dayne with them - that the bind off gets ruffly because of the ribbing. i'm going to try doing a few rows of plain stockinette at the top of these and see if it eliminates the ruffles.

Oh fun! Do you do larping or tabletop? I'm in the midst of a Dark Ages Vampire game right now, playing an angry Cappadocian nun with zero social skills.

[identity profile] 2eclipse.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
both.
i've been playing in owbn for...4 years or so, though i had contact with the game before that. i started LARPing when i was 14 but it was c-punk. i would have started with tabletop when i was 11 but i couldn't find anyone to play with me.
nuns make everything funny.
have you branched out or do you mainly play vampire?

I had to write when I saw you mention Cindy Gregorson. She use to the pastor of my home town church in Balaton. I worked for her for several years. I was the secretary for our church from the time I was 13 until I graduated high school. I typed the bulletins and made up the monthly newsletter.

Talk about blast from the past, it is good to hear that she has moved up in her career.

district superintendant is only a temporary position. she told me her heart is still in parish ministry. still....you have to be pretty respected to be asked to serve. so that's good.
she seemed like a nice lady. she just couldn't help me much with the job thing. the system isn't set up that way.
you know, you don't have to have excuses to post here. i don't bite. well..not hard :)

i will say hi for you.

I'm 100% tabletop at this point. This is actually my first Vampire game. I've mostly played a lot of indie games -- The Shadow of Yesterday, Mountain Witch, etc. I apparently game into gaming backwards. ;)

[identity profile] 2eclipse.livejournal.com 2007-06-25 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah for independent gaming!
my husband and i are playing a kinda weird tabletop game right now called "dogs in the vineyard".....you play a bunch of mormon gunslingers...or something like that. it's pretty cool. our buddy shawn has gotten us into a lot of obscure board games and such too, which i'm very much enjoying...especially some of the cheapass games like kill dr. lucky (like backwards clue)and give me the brain(a card game involving a bunch of zombies running a fast food joint with only one brain between them).
