so yesterday on NPR they were talking about adam....something-or-other. the first person to be charged with treason in 50 years. So i got to thinking....50 years? who was charged with treason 50 years ago? i didn't look it up. and i don't want you to either. but i DO want your guesses and your thoughts (or your hard facts if you really know).
my guess led me to some speculation that i want to run by you all. think about your own guess before going behind the cut.
i am thinking it was the rosenberg trial....and the mcarthy-ism that was going on then speaks worlds to me about where we are now. it also raised questions for me. do we have to be frightened to consider charging people with treason? or only to think treason is important? i think this stuff is important. i think it is a horrible thing to tell others not to "shed tears for westerners." but my main concern is about where we have come as a nation socially. were we this divided during the cold war? despite bush's approval ratings, i feel like a minority in my heart-sickness with what he has done recently, especially with the torture bill. i want to know what happened to the people who stood up to the govenmemt during the cold war.
